Brown Pelicans are the smallest of all pelican species, and at one time were an increasingly rare sight along eastern and southern coastlines. Like many birds, they were threatened by the cumulative damage of years of pesticides. Today, Louisiana's state bird has begun to recover its numbers and is more frequently seen gliding above coastal waters in search of its primary food, fish.
