The Nene, or Hawaiian Goose, is a wild bird found only in the Hawaiian Islands where it is the state bird. Until people inhabited the island, Nenes had few predators and foraged peacefully for a variety of fruits and grasses. Loss of habitat and the introduction of predators such as dogs and mongoose have severely threatened the population, which came close to extinction. Efforts to help this WatchList species through captive breeding have had some success, but predation is difficult to control.
