Willow Ptarmigan

The Willow Ptarmigan is the state bird of Alaska. During winter months, its brown plumage changes to snow white. White feathers even cover the feet, providing extra warmth and winter camouflage from predators. During summer the Arctic bird feeds on flowers, leaves and insects. Twigs and buds make up the winter diet. Males defend their nests fiercely.
